Agathe is doing an internship for a year at Vaco San Francisco!

I am 22 years old and I just finished my bachelors degree within service management in Copanhagen business school in June 2019. I was lucky enough to get this internship here at Vaco in San Francisco. I arrived 1 of July and started mid July, so I have been here for a few months now. ​

How did you find this internship?
It was actually through word of mouth, from a friend of a friend, pretty much. I sent my CV and a few weeks later I got the job, so that was really nice!  

What was the most appealing about the internship that made you apply?
I think a year in California. That sounded absolutely perfect to me. I decided not to start my masters degree straight away. So in the spring I was looking for jobs and internships or travel opportunities and I really wanted to combine work with traveling for a year before going back to my masters. And this was an absolutely perfect fit for me. 

Have you been to California before?
Yes I been to San Francisco twice. So I also knew that this city is so nice and I could definitely see myself live here and it's such an easy point of departure in California and the U.S. as well if you want to travel around. You can also get by without a car which was also important for me not to be..., for example LA you would be more dependent on a car. And for a year it really didn't make sense to get a car. I've always loved California, I really wanted to try living here. 

Do you think this internship is helping you with your future career?
Of Course I don't know yet, but I definitely think it will open up a lot of doors, careerwise for me. I can also tell I'm already more interested in digital marketing than I was before, it's such a bigger world then I knew. So I definitely think if I want to look more into the tech world or digital marketing it’s definitely gonna help my career prospects.

What do you do at Vaco?
Vaco is a vendor company for a Fortune 500 company. So we help optimize and create ads for the client. Analyze websites and create ads based on these websites in collaboration with their products (or client). 

Has it been harder than you imagined it would be? 
No, no not really. It’s been a really good workload, it's really nice offices cause we are based in the client's offices, which is very very nice. The work is good, it's challenging at times but that's only a good thing and you definitely learn a lot and you get different tasks throughout the day.

How is it to work in this environment? 
It’s very nice, people here are so friendly. The american work environment is casual, relaxed, open and friendly. Not corporate or… it's just a nice atmosphere. 

What advice can you give others looking for an internship in the U.S.?
Be open minded and go for it. Send a bunch of applications and if you think the job description is not a perfect match for what you want to do it’s going to open doors for you anyways and it’s gonna be such an experience even if it might not be exactly what you are looking for right now. It’s so much fun to be working in California and not just traveling or being a student, it’s a very different atmosphere and you integrate yourself much more into the society.
