Hi Leonie! Why did you choose to intern at Starmen Design Group and how did you get your internship there?
Hi! I knew I wanted to do my internship in Los Angeles so I started off by sending my resume to a few agencies that I found interesting. Starmen Design Group was the first one to reply and couple of days later we scheduled for an interview where I was offered a position on their winter/spring internship program.
How did a day at your internship look like?
Every day was different, so it’s hard to say.
My day started at 9am and I normally got off work at around 6pm. Since I am a graphic design student I was mainly assigned with design tasks, such as creating logo designs, flyers, web designs, newsletters, mockups and photo edits, etc.
What was your best learning experience in the internship?
This internship experience gave me a real sense of what the design agency does, and
helped me understand the roles of different teams and how the company is
operated. These are valuable work experiences that can only be gained from within a
How was L.A. like to live in as a student?
It was great, the list of things you can do in Los Angeles is endless. During my nine
weeks in L.A. I never felt bored and there is more than enough to keep you busy.
Where did you live and how did you find your housing?
I booked a place through Airbnb that I shared with a few others. For me that was a
great way to meet and get to know new people.
What did you do on your spare time?
On my spare time I tried to explore as many new things as I possibly could. Hiking,
outdoor yoga, visiting museums, eating at new restaurants, clubbing, enjoying the
nice weather, is only some of the things I did. I also took some classes in aerial silks
and trapeze while I was there, and it was so much fun! Definitely something I will
keep on practicing.
What is your absolute best memory from the time you lived in Los
I am completely obsessed with Disney so when I was assigned to help with a project
for Disney, I was pretty stoked about that.
Any advice to those who would like to intern in L.A like you did?
If you have not yet decided what company you want to intern at I would highly
recommend being at a smaller agency. The smaller the company is, the smaller the
stage, which increases your chances of getting noticed. The people that work there
will see how much effort and hard work you put in to every task.
